Callaway Quantum Drivers and Fairway Metals

In its quest to develop the new Quantum line of drivers, Callaway had been researching alloy materials for a number of years, searching for what was next in a driver face. What would bring more ball speed, what could give them a faster face in a driver and how could they create it?

Callaway Quantum Driver

The research and development team wasn’t finding solutions and felt as though they had hit the end of the runway on finding a titanium alternative. That roadblock led the team to thinking about ultimately what they wanted in a face and what they were looking to bring to market.

If they were going to find better results, they would have to look at multi-material applications.

“We had looked at where titanium sat and where carbon fiber sat. Our research showed that there was an opportunity somewhere in the middle,” Callaway Vice President of R&D, Brian Williams, said. “Something in between titanium and carbon fiber, you could have a pretty powerful type of material. But, that material doesn’t exist.”

That didn’t exist; until now.

Through Callaway’s research, their engineers were able to develop the new Tri-Force face, utilizing titanium, poly mesh and carbon fiber to get better ball speed and more spin consistency across the face.

They went through thousands of simulations and testing and found that the Tri-Force face was delivering the exact results they were looking for.

“We as a leadership team, and an R&D group, got together in a room and said, ‘This is what we’re going to do. We have to have this product,’” Williams said. “That was a conversation we had with Chip (Brewer) our CEO and the rest of the senior leaders. We knew there were going to be technical challenges to solve for, we knew there was this all-new process and we had a lot of people who said we ned more time to be able to do this.

“But, we had a clarity and vision to know that this is what we needed to do.”

It was what they needed to do and they needed to do it quickly. Despite the call for more time, Callaway’s R&D team was tasked by senior leadership to bring it to market in 2026. And they did. The result, through meticulous testing and new material designs, is the Quantum line of drivers and fairway metals.

The drivers bring more ball speed, consistent spin and an exciting new outlook for what Callaway is doing in the driver market going forward.

Tri-Force Face

Callaway Quantum Driver Face

Callaway built the face with a thin layer of titanium and carbon fiber bound together through a poly mesh material that saw incredible results. The north star for this venture was speed, but Callaway also didn’t want to lose forgiveness. They found that they were able to accomplish both tasks through this new multi-material face.

“What we have here is a titanium striking surface; this is still the best striking surface. It’s great under compression. Like I mentioned, though, you’ve got to be able to support it if you’re going to go thinner and thinner, which is how you’re going to get faster,” Callaway Senior Product Manager, Zach Oakley, said. “We actually were able to take this 14 percent thinner than we were with Elyte, with previous titanium designs. Then we have what you mentioned is poly mesh, this is a military grade polymer that is designed specifically for ballistic impacts and it also does a lot for energy transfer.”

Each of the materials plays a specific role to bring the characteristics and results that Callaway was looking for. Callaway found that the poly mesh was an excellent binder for the titanium and carbon without making for a stiff, rigid face that lost ball speed.

Instead, the poly mesh supports the face and improves the strength of titanium without slowing it down. Callaway believes that carbon makes for an excellent complement to titanium to allow for some stretching when the ball strikes the surface.

In addition to ball speed, the research and development team found an unintended benefit of the new face, as well, in the form of spin consistency. On off-center strikes, spin can be an issue. However, the research team found that Tri-Force was bringing better results than what the team had seen in the past.

“It's going to give you better performance across the face. It's going to make those ones that you hit off the toe, that kind of fall out of the sky, they're going to stay in the air longer,” Oakley said. “You're not going to see that squirrely left miss. And then for someone, if you catch it on the heel that leads out to the right, it's not going to, it's going to spin lower.”

Callaway combined the new Tri-Force face with the artificial intelligence data that the company has been able to compile over the last several years to create what they believe is one of the fastest, most forgiving faces the company has created.

The goal had always been to create a fast driver, because the research had shown that speed and distance equal lower scores.

“Strokes gained insights weigh distance twice as important as accuracy. If you can put it farther down the fairway, you can score,” Williams said. “But, we just know there’s an emotional thing that comes with speed and hitting it farther off the tee is a satisfying thing for people. You want to hit it past your playing partner, you want to hit it to spots you haven’t hit before and you want to see numbers that you haven’t seen on your launch monitor.

“So, that’s our north star.”

Quantum Driver Models

Max: “That is the core model. It is kind of the best balance, or the best blend, of distance and forgiveness. You’re going to see players on Tour that use it and you’ll see 25 handicaps that use it,” Oakley said. “It definitely spans the widest array of players. It’s kind of got a nice modern shape that still looks forgiving, but it’s not quite as stretched back as some of the other models that we have.”

Max D: “The Max D, this is for players that are looking for kind of maximum forgiveness, something that’s really easy to get the ball up in the air. It’s got some build in draw bias in the heel section,” Oakley said. “So, it will have downrange, you’ll see that turn over a little bit right to left. Or, for someone who needs to kill that side spin, maybe struggles with a slice, that’s going to be the model for you. Certainly has a little bit more of a forgiving profile at address.”

Triple Diamond: “You’ll notice that these have different cosmetics. These are the 360-carbon chassis that we launched with the Paradigm drivers a few years ago. It looks amazing,” Oakley said. “This is going to free up some mass so that we can use at our discretion to optimize performance. Triple Diamond, this is our most played on Tour. It’s fast, from a shaping perspective, we haven’t really touched it much because our Tour players love it.”

Triple Diamond Max: “I like to say (Triple Diamond Max) is the weight back setting and Triple Diamond is weight forward setting. It’s not quite that simple, but having these two different models, it let us do a couple different things,” Oakley said. “This is one that we have launched in the past, but more of a limited edition or a later drop. But, we’ve had so much demand, both on Tour and with (consumers). And so, we’re bringing it out with the core family for the first time. Compared to the Triple Diamond, it’s a little bit larger, but it’s going to have a lot of the same DNA. It’s the same look at address, but just a little bigger, so it’s going to have a little bit more forgiveness, a little bit more spin and a little bit higher launch.”

Max Fast: “This is for players that need a little bit of more swing speed, want to turn back the clock,” Oakley said. “This is a little bit lighter in terms of the shaft, the grip, the head weight and it’s going to have a similar look at address as our Max D. So, it’s going to be really easy to get the ball up in the air in a little bit shallower profile.”

Quantum Fairway Metals and Hybrids

The Quantum fairway metals and hybrids are not equipped with the Tri-Force Face, but have some incredible technology and features built in to give golfers outstanding performance.

Some of the main components of the fairway metals and hybrids include a Speed Wave 2.0 that consists of a 40-gram weight positioned low and forward for faster ball speeds and consistent launch. The Speed Wave 2.0 helps golfers with strikes low on the face to bring consistency on the off-center strikes.

The new step sole design helps with turf interaction, reducing turf interaction by creating an optimized sole design that creates efficient strikes. The three and five-woods also have the Optifit4 hosel, which allows for lie and loft adjustability independently.

Fairway Metal Models

Max: The Quantum Max fairway metal is designed for speed, high launch and forgiveness. It has a shallow face for consistency and is the core model, likely fitting the most golfers.

Ti: The Quantum Ti fairway metal features a full titanium construction, which gives the forgiveness of Max with the performance of Triple Diamond. It’s designed for players seeking a confidence-inspiring fairway wood with high performance and fast ball speeds.

Triple Diamond: The Triple Diamond fairway metal has a compact, tour-validated shape with a deeper face. It has a neutral center of gravity, giving better workability and a penetrating launch with optimized spin.

Max D: The Max D is Callaway’s easiest fairway metal to hit and offers high launch, maximum forgiveness and a slight draw bias. It has a larger footprint and a shallower face to promote easy launch and a square delivery. It’s built for the player looking for slice correction or someone wanting to work the ball to the left.

Max Fast: This is the lightest fairway metal, designed for golfers looking for swing speed help and a lightweight build. Everything about this club is designed to make swinging easier with high MOI and high launch.

Hybrid Models

Max: This is the core hybrid model that will likely fit the most golfers. It’s a clean, midsized hybrid with a neutral center of gravity and moderate face height. It offers a versatile mix of launch, forgiveness and shot control.

Max OS: The Max OS has an oversized shape with a draw bias for golfers looking for slice correction. It has high MOI and is built for easy launch and maximum forgiveness.

Max Fast: This is the lightest hybrid model available and made for golfers looking for help with swing speed. It’s a light setup with high MOI and a shallow face profile for high launch and consistent contact.

As you can see, Quantum has something for everyone. Callaway believes that speed is its north star and Quantum is bringing speed to the forefront.
