Golf Apparel Buying Guide – Men’s Tops
Golfers have a plethora of options when it comes to golf clothes, whether they’re golf shirts, sweaters, quarter zip or hoodies. Carl’s Golfland stocks a ton of options and we’re here to make your shopping experience that much easier with our golf apparel buying guide.
We’ll focus on men’s tops in this guide to help you figure out what you need and what style fits you.
Golf fashion has changed so much and brands have continued to adapt to trends and culture shifts where some companies now offer different styles that work for on course, off the course or even both.
Golf Polos
When looking for golf polos, you’ll need to figure out what style you’re looking for. Are you more traditional, fashion forward, are you looking for comfort or focused on quality of materials?
If you’re looking for something more traditional with high quality, there are a few options. Peter Millar, Johnnie-O and FootJoy all have great options.
Peter Millar is a luxury brand with different fit options, whether you’re looking for a polo that fits a little looser or a more athletic look with its crown crafted option. Peter Millar also has a variety of fabrics from moisture-wicking, four-way stretch golf polos to its performance mesh polo.
RLX Ralph Lauren is a classic line with polos from solid colors to stripes in a classic fit, Featherweight classic fit and a performance material, or a tailored fit.
Johnnie-O has traditional options with solid color polos and stripes, but also offers a few unique designs with their prints. Johnnie-O traditionally has lighter weight polos that are free flowing and comfortable to play golf in.
Johnnie-O also has team licensed apparel with pro and college sports that are integrated into their lines and made with quality materials.
FootJoy is noted for its longstanding place in golf fashion and has a breadth of polos that come in solid colors, stripes, polka dots and unique prints. Similar to the other brands, you’ll find quality materials and a variety of fits within what FootJoy has to offer when it comes to polos.
Greyson and G/FORE are an in between where they offer traditional styles, but also push the envelope on fashion and what they offer, while doing it with the utmost in quality.
Greyson plays off of its wolf mantra with wolves incorporated into the design, as well as nature and colors not traditionally used in golf apparel. G/FORE pushes those colors even further with bright, loud colors and designs that will always stand out on the course or off. Both brands have polo options that can be worn for either occasion.
If you’re looking for more lifestyle fashion and a more relaxed feel, adidas brings designs to the table that take trends into account. The Originals line paid homage to the 1980s and brought fun fabrics and designs with colors from bright blues, to greens and reds, as well as deep browns and purple.
Breezy is another relaxed brand that has fun designs and prints in a lightweight polo. Bob Does Sports put their name behind the brand and has produced some quality options at a good price point.
TravisMathew is a great brand to consider if you’re looking for something that can be worn on and off the course. Typically, the polos will be in a more athletic fit, a lightweight material with fun designs and colors. TravisMathew uses floral prints, stripes and an extensive offering of colors to give you a ton of great options.
PUMA has wide breadth of what it offers, from classic looking polos to bright floral and isle prints that will pop on the course. PUMA also ties itself to trends and other brands through collabs that extend its fashion options.
Pullovers
Hoodies, pullovers and quarter zips are more popular than ever on the golf course and it shows in what brands offer and the number of options available.
If you’re looking for something warm, something light, heavy or just a piece to match your golf shoes, we have everything you’re looking for.
Adidas comes through in this department with a number of options and styles, ranging from their lightweight quarter zip to the Ultimate365 Elevated hoodie, the new EQT line, the Go-To line with crewnecks and quarter zips and a little more fashion forward with the Originals offerings.
FootJoy is an underrated brand in this category with how many options they offer and the styles that are available. ThermoSeries makes for great layering pieces no matter the conditions as it adapts to the conditions around you. HydroLite is designed to keep you dry while not limiting you in your swing, TempoSeries makes for great mid-layers with water-repellent and moisture-wicking material that feels light and free.
If you’re looking for more fashion forward options, Greyson has some outstanding options that again have high quality.
Johnnie-O has licensed hoodies and quarter zips with your favorite sports teams with a number of other options that go well as base layers on or off the course.
TravisMathew offers a good mixture of fashion and function with their pullover options. Quarter zips and hoodies are all available, and you can opt for the Cloud material made to feel exceptionally soft and light.
Vests
Don’t hate on a good vest. It can be a statement piece for your outfit on the course, or it can help keep you warm when playing in the elements.
Vests have come a long way, too. They’re not just a sweater with the sleeves cut off, although those still exist.
Adidas has proven that you can turn a vest into a main feature with the EQT line, Originals, the Ultimate365 vest and the Elevated quarter-zip vest. Adidas makes vests with a hood or your traditional vest.
Peter Millar is again going to be more of a traditional look, but the company offers lightweight options up to quilted puffer vests that can be worn off the course, as well.
FootJoy probably has the largest selection when it comes to vests, again with ThermoSeries, fleece, HydroKnit, Approach and Windshirt options for different elements and weather you might be experiencing.
Sifting through the number of options within men’s apparel can be daunting, but narrowing it down by what you’re looking for, what your needs are, the size and fit you want and the style you want to wear is a great place to start when shopping for golf clothes.
