  • Joe Portfilio JOE PORTFILIO
    Joe Portfilio

    Joe, a graduate of the Professional Golf Management Program at Ferris State University has been a PGA Professional since 1990 and Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certified since 2007. Since joining Carl’s Golfland in 1990, Joe has given thousands of private lessons to golfers of all ages and skill levels. He is a Level 3 TPI Certified Junior Coach, TPI Certified Level 3 Golf Mechanics and TPI Certified Level 3 Golf Instructor. TPI is the world’s leading authority in golf health, fitness, junior development, biomechanics and coaching education. Joe is also a U.S.Kids Golf Certified Instructor, Certified Adaptive Golf Instructor and Trackman Certified Professional. Joe reminds all of his players that “Golf is a game, thus it is meant to be enjoyed.” Joe is available for lessons year-round.

  • Gene Bone II GENE BONE
    Gene Bone II

    Gene became an assistant professional in 1983 and gained his PGA Class A professional status in 1988. He was worked at some of Michigan’s finest golf establishments in his 27+ years as an instructor and golf professional: Treetops, Bay Pointe, Links at Pinewood, Eldorado and the Lynx GC. Gene has earned many accolades in his career including 1998 Michigan PGA Golf Professional of the Year and was named Top 20 golf instructors in Michigan by Golf Digest in 2000 and 2001. Gene believes in teaching the basic fundamentals of the game and keeps the lessons simple and fun. He stresses that as our body changes we must adapt those changes to our swing in order to keep the game enjoyable. Gene is available for lessons year-round.

  • Tom Harding TOM HARDING
    Tom Harding

    Tom has 25+ years of teaching experience and has been a PGA member since 1995. He has been recognized by Golf Digest as a Top Teacher in Michigan. Tom played for the Michigan State golf team prior to stints on the Australian, Canadian, Nationwide and Asian Tours. He played in the PGA Tour’s Buick Open in 1998 and 2003, and won the 1993 Canadian PGA. He was also named the Michigan PGA Player of the Year in 1997 and 2002, and has won the Michigan PGA Championship, the Tournament of Champions and the Michigan PGA Match Play Championship twice. In 2017 he qualified and played in the U.S. Senior Open and was inducted into the Michigan PGA Hall of Fame. In 2018 he was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. Tom is also very proud of the accomplishments of his three daughters who have carried on his legacy as members of the Michigan State Women’s Golf Team.

  • Brian Liberati BRIAN LIBERATI
    Brian Liberati

    Brian Liberati turned Professional in 1980 and became a Class A Professional in 1986. Brian began his career at some of Michigan’s finest country clubs. Brian is also a U.S. Kids Certified golf instructor and has taught multiple state champions, along with numerous all-state players. He is a Certified American Development Model Teacher and Coach - a new program sponsored by the PGA of America. Brian is Level 1 & 2 TrackMan Certified. He teaches golfers of all levels and he believes in teaching the individual, not a method. Brian wants his students to become more reactionary, not analytical and the drills he teaches will help any golfer have more confidence when setting up to the golf ball. He is on staff year round at Carl’s Golfland at St. John’s.

  • John Hyde JOHN HYDE
    John Hyde

    John is a PGA Class A Professional with over 20 years of instruction experience with the Michigan PGA. John has served memberships at many venues’, including Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc and Fieldstone Golf Club in Auburn Hills. John employs a simple and straightforward method of teaching golf fundamentals. He does not prescribe to the “one swing fits all” approach. Along with customized instruction, the fundamental techniques of grip, stance, posture and alignment are a focus. Over the years John has developed drills and concepts with the use of visual aids to make it easier for students to obtain a repetitive approach of the fundamentals. After this is accomplished, a golfer can move forward and attain their goal of playing better golf. John is available year-round for lessons.

Types of Lessons


Carl's Golfland has a lesson program that is perfect for you. If you need a single tune-up or are looking to improve all aspects of your game, we offer private lessons on both an individual and series basis. Please see the instructor profiles and chart for more information and lesson rates.


For groups of 3 or more people we offer Semi-Private lessons with our PGA Instructors. Semi-Private lessons are restricted to 3 hitting areas because of space requirements. Payment in-full is required at the time the lesson is scheduled. $150 per hour/per instructor


A variety of group lessons appealing to a wide range of beginner and intermediate players are available. All group lessons are taught by PGA Professionals. One hour long group lesson meet rain or shine in the covered tee area. Not just for adults, group lessons at Carl's are also structured for children ages 5-15. Our Junior Golf Program is an excellent way for boys and girls of all ages to become excited about the game. Trackman Combine will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. By hitting 6 shots to 10 selected distances, Trackman can grade your accuracy and distance control on a scale of 0-100. After a report is generated with your score, Trackman can grade you against the pros or peers by handicap, gender, age or region. One of Carl's PGA instructors will work with you to analyze your results and formulate a plan for improvement. A swing analysis will be done using V1 video software as well. $175 for 90 minutes


Lower your score with an on-course playing lesson with one of our PGA Professionals. We know how important it is to have a sound fundamental golf swing to hit the ball, but what most players overlook is their ability to play the game. A playing lesson will teach you to lower your score by improving your course management and strategy. For the new golfer a playing lesson is a great way to learn about etiquette and basic rules of the game. Contact one of our golf professionals for scheduling and pricing.

Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Evaluation

Knowing your body's physical limitations can directly correlate to swing flaws. Through a series of simple physical tests and a V1 swing analysis, we can evaluate your flexibility and strength as it relates to your swing. Following this evaluation, a six week, 18 session workout plan will be designed to improve deficiencies and increase flexibility. These exercises can be done easily in your home or with the help of a personal trainer. With access to the MyTPI website, you can track progress and see guides for exercises. TPI Evaluations take place at the Bloomfield Hills location with TPI Certified Instructor and PGA Professional Joe Portfilio. Be sure to contact Joe directly with questions.


A series of simple physical tests to evaluate a player's flexibility and strength related to the golf swing. Establish a "fitness handicap" to track progress and set goals. V-1 video session to identify swing faults and fixes (copy of swing emailed to student). Drills assigned to improve swing technique. Six week, 18 session personalized workout program, based on your evaluation, designed to help improve flexibility and strength. Access to personal MyTPI website to view exercises online. Exercises can be done in comfort of your own home or gym with little equipment. Video tutorial and guide for individual exercises.


Includes full TPI Fitness Evaluation. $200 value. Four one hour individual full-swing video sessions to track progress. Fitness re-evaluation with upload "handicap" and new 18 session workout plan.
